The Egress Window Installation Process
Cutting a four-foot opening in a load-bearing foundation wall is structural work that happens to end with a window in it. Here is the whole sequence, including the parts that are loud, dusty and inconvenient.
Start to finish
Every job runs through the same six stages. The middle four happen in one to two days on site; the bookends are calendar time.
Cutting the wall
This is the stage that separates a real installation from a fast one, and it happens in a specific order for structural reasons.
Shoring first. A foundation wall carries the house. Before any material is removed, the load above the planned opening is temporarily supported. On a modern block or poured wall in a single-story house that's straightforward. On a two-story with a bearing wall stacked above, it takes more.
Then the cut. The opening is laid out to the finished dimension — which is not the window's nominal size; it accounts for the buck, the sill and the required net clear opening — and cut with a concrete saw. We cut wet. That's partly for blade life and partly for the dust discussion below.
Then the header. A lintel or header transfers the load that was travelling through the removed section around the new opening and back into the wall on either side. Skipping or undersizing this is the failure you don't see for five years, and then see as stair-step cracking above the window.
Then the buck and sill. A treated frame is set in the masonry opening, shimmed plumb, fastened and sealed. The sill gets particular attention — it's the horizontal surface where water will sit if anything ever gets past the window, and in our climate something eventually will. It is also why the well and its stone core go in before any backfill touches them.
Dust, silica and your basement
Cutting concrete and block releases respirable crystalline silica. This is a genuine health hazard rather than a nuisance, and it's regulated for that reason. Wet cutting suppresses most of it at the source, which is why we do it even though it means managing slurry.
Beyond that, expect containment: plastic sheeting isolating the work area from the rest of the basement, and negative air or HEPA extraction where the situation calls for it. Some dust migration is realistic in an open basement no matter how carefully it's done — if you have a finished basement, storage, or anything sensitive nearby, moving it before cut day is worth the twenty minutes.
Three kinds of wall, three different jobs
Hollow block (CMU)
The most common in postwar Grand Rapids housing. Cuts relatively quickly. Hollow cores need to be dealt with at the jambs so the opening is solid and sealed. Predictable, and generally the least expensive to open.
Poured concrete
Slower and harder on blades, especially where reinforcing steel runs through the cut line. The upside is consistency — a poured wall behaves the same the whole way through, and the header detail is straightforward.
Rubble, fieldstone, clay tile
Common in pre-1940 stock — Heritage Hill, Eastown, Creston, the West Side. The wall's capacity depends on stones bearing against each other, so removing a section is a genuinely different structural problem. Some need an engineer. We say so rather than finding out mid-cut.
What it's like to have this done at your house
- Access. We need a route to the wall from outside, ideally wide enough for a mini excavator. Gates, fences, AC units and tight side yards may mean hand digging — that gets identified at the quote, not on the day.
- Noise. Concrete sawing is loud for the hours it takes. If you work from home, plan around it.
- Your yard. There will be a spoil pile and machine tracks. We protect what we can and restore what we disturbed, but a freshly dug well area takes a season to blend back in.
- Utilities. MISS DIG 811 locates come before any excavation. Private lines — irrigation, invisible fence, a run to a detached garage — aren't covered by public locates, so tell us where yours are.
- Weather. We work through West Michigan winters. Frozen ground slows the dig and adds some cost, but with roughly 140 freeze-thaw cycles a year, the ground here doesn't stay locked up for long.
- Inspection. The building inspector comes after completion. You get the measured net clear opening in writing at the same time.
Will cutting my foundation weaken the house?
Not when it's done properly — that's what the shoring and the header are for. The load that used to travel through the removed section gets carried around the opening instead. What weakens a house is cutting an opening without either of those, which is unfortunately what a low bid sometimes means.
Do you need to get inside my house?
Yes. The cut is finished from inside, the buck is set and sealed from inside, and the interior return is framed there. Most of the noisy work happens at the wall itself, so the rest of the house stays usable.
What if you find something unexpected in the wall?
It happens — an abandoned drain line, an old coal chute, a section of wall that's in worse shape than the surface suggested. We stop, show you what we found, and price the difference before continuing, against the same published line items as the original quote. Nobody likes a change order, but discovering it on the invoice is worse than discovering it in person.
Can I do this myself?
Legally, an owner-occupant can pull their own permit in Grand Rapids. Whether you should is a different question. The rental saw is available to anyone; the structural judgment about shoring a bearing wall and sizing a header is the part that isn't. If you're an experienced builder doing your own house, you already know which parts to be careful about. If you're not, this is a poor first structural project.
How long until I can finish the room?
Immediately after final inspection. The opening is sealed, flashed and weathertight when we leave, so drywall and trim can follow as soon as the inspector signs off.
